The First Mate

She slips off her shoes
not the Captain
is she
of the neat sailing boat
tied down
at Pier Number Three
the Captain
Himself
is her own
and she his best mate
they are a crew
made of two
lovebirds?
most have no debate
for in fair weather
or foul
they steer their course
between the waves
under the guiding stars
since they are
at sea
there is no horse of course
just the Captain
and the now shoeless
First Mate.

His Sailing Ship

Half his life he had sailed
the ship of his life
with a varied
but fascinating crew
parents, teachers, spouse
children, friends
coworkers
yet it was his life's ship
he'd had the helm
through fair weather, storm
much in-between
the crew seemed often
to be changing
his sails
tattered, the hull worn
The God of wind and sea
he'd sometime fight
for control
of the ships rudder
yet asked for divine help
when beached
or tossed upon the rocks
an odd life
a voyage not over
less he sinks
he must still sail his ship.
